Between 30 October and 1 November 2019, at the School of Music and Dance of the San Diego State University in California, the Institute of Music and Dance will implement the project entitled The Roots of Dance/Korzenie Tańca, financed from the funds of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland within the Inspiring Culture programme.

The project, developed in collaboration with San Diego State University, will feature workshops on traditional Polish dance with elements of instrumental music workshops and choreographic workshops inspired by Polish tradition. The workshops will be held at the Faculty of Music and Dance of San Diego State University.

For three consecutive days, Piotr Zgorzelski – the founder of the Academy of Traditional Dance together with Anna Čemeljić will lead the workshops entitled The Body in Traditional Rhythm: Contact, Harmony, Community, Communication, Improvisation Presented on the Example of Polish Traditional Dances.

The workshops are open to both dance and music students. During the workshops, the students will have the opportunity to learn various traditional Polish tunes from musicians of the WoWaKin Trio.

San Diego University students will also have the opportunity to participate in choreographic workshops inspired by Polish dance traditions. The workshop will be led by Aleksandra Dziurosz.

Both workshops will be accompanied by WoWaKin Trio: Paula Kinaszewska – violin, vocals; Bartłomiej Woźniak – baraban, percussion instruments, banjolele, singing and Mateusz Wachowiak – three-row accordion, bass.

For the grand finale of the project, the organisers have prepared a special concert of traditional Polish music played live by WaWoKin. The concert will be complemented by the presentation of the workshop participants and a dance party. The concert will take place on 1 November at 7 p.m. at Dance Studio Theater and will be open to the public.
